Just Got a New Windshield? What You Do Next Matters.

A new windshield is a beautiful thing. The world looks clearer, your car looks sharper, and most importantly, your vehicle's structural integrity is fully restored. But after the technician leaves and you have the keys back in your hand, what you do in the next 24-48 hours is critical.

Modern windshields are a key safety component of your vehicle, and the adhesive used to bond the glass to the frame needs time to cure properly. Think of it like a broken bone setting — the initial bond is strong, but it needs a little time and care to reach its full, super-strong potential. Messing with this curing process can lead to a host of problems, from annoying wind noise and water leaks to a dangerously compromised installation.

At Glassco, we don't just install your glass; we want to make sure it performs flawlessly for the life of your vehicle. That's why we've put together this simple guide to the do's and don'ts of windshield aftercare.

The "Do" List: Simple Steps for a Perfect Cure

These simple actions will help ensure your new windshield settles in perfectly.

  • DO leave the retention tape on. That strip of tape our technician places along the top and sides of your new windshield isn't just for show. It holds the glass perfectly in place and prevents it from shifting while the urethane adhesive cures. We recommend leaving it on for at least 24 hours.
  • DO drive carefully. Gentle driving is the name of the game for the first day or two. Avoid slamming doors, as the change in cabin pressure can put stress on the fresh seal. Likewise, avoid bumpy roads, potholes, and sudden braking or acceleration. Your new windshield will thank you.
  • DO crack a window. If you need to close your doors a bit more firmly, cracking a window by about an inch can help. This equalizes the air pressure inside and outside the vehicle, reducing the stress on the new windshield seal when the door shuts.
  • DO keep it dry (at first). The urethane adhesive needs a dry environment to cure properly. Avoid washing your car for at least 48 hours. If it rains, that's okay — the seal is designed to be water-tight from the outside. The main concern with car washes is the high-pressure water jets, which can damage the fresh seal.

The "Don't" List: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoiding these common pitfalls is just as important as the items on the "do" list.

  • DON'T use a high-pressure car wash. This is the big one. As mentioned, the intense pressure from automatic and manual car wash wands can force water into the uncured seal or even damage the new moulding. Wait at least two full days, and even then, consider a gentle hand wash for the first week.
  • DON'T remove the retention tape early. We know, it can be tempting to peel it off for that perfectly clean look. But please, resist the urge! Removing it too soon can allow the windshield to shift, leading to an improper seal. Wait at least 24 hours.
  • DON'T put stress on the glass. Avoid leaning on the glass, placing objects on the dashboard that might press against it, or attaching any suction-cup mounts (like for a phone or GPS) for a day or two. Let the seal do its thing without any added pressure.
  • DON'T forget about your ICBC claim. If your replacement was covered by insurance, we handle the paperwork for you. As an ICBC-approved glass repair facility, Glassco offers direct billing to make your life easier. There's nothing you need to do but drive away safely.
