A chip and a crack describe different damage

A chip is often a localized impact mark, sometimes with short radiating breaks. A crack is a line of damage that may extend from an impact or spread across the glass. The name alone does not decide whether the windshield can be repaired.

On Vancouver roads, temperature changes, vibration and further impacts can worsen existing damage. Prompt assessment is useful, especially if the mark is changing or affects your view, but it is not a guarantee that repair will be possible.

Look beyond size

A technician considers the damage’s position, depth, pattern, extent, contamination and effect on visibility. Proximity to an edge and the condition of the glass also matter. There is no universal coin-size or crack-length threshold that makes every windshield safe to repair.

Describe any spreading, previous repairs or visibility concerns when requesting an appointment. Do not press on the damaged area or assume that a short crack can be left indefinitely.

What repair can and cannot do

Suitable damage may be addressed with resin while retaining the existing windshield. Repair can improve appearance, but the mark may remain. It is not a promise that the glass will look new or that future impacts cannot cause damage.

Replacement is appropriate when assessment finds that repair is unsuitable. Ask why replacement is recommended so the decision is tied to your actual damage rather than a generic rule.

Replacement involves more than a new pane

The correct glass must match the vehicle and its equipment. The installation includes bonding requirements and a safe-drive-away instruction. Vehicles with windshield-mounted cameras may need manufacturer-specified calibration and checks, which should be discussed when booking.

Do not judge readiness solely by whether the glass looks fitted. Follow the technician’s timing and aftercare instructions, and report warning lights or new concerns after collection.

ICBC costs depend on repair versus replacement

With ICBC Comprehensive coverage, eligible windshield repairs are deductible-free. Windshield replacements require the policy deductible. Direct billing does not mean a replacement is free, and an online estimate is not your verified deductible.

Ask the shop to confirm coverage, authorization and any customer-pay amount before work begins. See ICBC’s glass and windshield guidance for the repair/replacement distinction.
